Athletics: Mulugeta Serbessa will race the Lanzarote Marathon

2003 Lanzarote Marathon Champion signed up for 2004

The winner of the 2003 Lanzarote Marathon, Mulugeta Serbessa, has signed up for the 2004 edition. He will stay in Lanzarote from the 3rd until the 10th of December: once again, we will have the pleasure to see him running on race day - the 4th. We expect from 700 to 800 runners for the 15th Lanzarote Marathon Festival (between the different races of full marathon, half marathon and 1/4 marathon.

Mulugeta Serbessa with international fame was born in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, the 22nd of August of 1971, but he lives in Czech Republic since he was 24. He does miss his country and therefore goes back to Ethiopia at least once a year. He works in the Prague Central Military Hospital as a medical doctor - specialized in orthopedics and traumathology.

Mulugeta is not a professional runner, he can train for the marathons only in his free time: running is his way of relaxation. This year he ran many short and long races, including marathons.

Mulugeta really likes the Lanzarote Marathon because it is very well organized; he would call it a city marathon because of the many spectators. For training, he actually prefers to run in the forest. While he is running - he told us - he many times thinks about running tactics and how to win, but sometimes also simply about life and other routine and familiar things. He listens to music, and though not a day-to-day listener, he especially likes reggae and jazz music.

Two of his best times are 2:18:01 at the Prague International Marathon last 23.05.2004 and 2:21:09 at the Kysucky Maraton - Cadca, Slovakia Republic, on 29.05.2004, only 6 days later!!!

As he told us, his body can regenerate very quickly, and he could even run 2 marathons within two days.

His plan for the future is to participate in ultra marathons. He is also sure that if he had time to train systematically twice a day like a professional runner, he could run a marathon in 2:10:00.

Here we have his best results:

1999: 1st - Jacksonville Marathon, Florida (2:22:26)
2001: 1st - Maratón de Calviá (Mallorca) (2:22:43)
