Athletics: Davis named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Janine Davis has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after breaking the U.S. high school indoor 600m girls' record Sunday at the MAC Record Assault Challenge in New York City at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory.

A senior at Queen of Peace high school (N.J.), Davis came from behind to catch Towson Catholic's (Md.) Devon Williams, the U.S. 500m prep record holder, with less than 50m left to win in a national high school record time of 1 minute, 29.27 seconds. Her performance bettered the record of 1:29.69 previously held by Stacy Ann Lingston of Boys & Girls High School in New York. Davis also won the 1,000m Saturday at the Armory in a U.S. leading time of 2:48.59.

Now in its fifth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

2005 USATF Athlete of the Week Winners: January 4, Amy Rudolph; January 11, Dathan Ritzenhein; January 18, Janine Davis.
