Posted: January 22, 2005 Athletics: Cancer Survivor Ready To Do 2 Marathons in 3 Weeks! Palmetto Bay, Florida – January 21, 2005 - Having just completed the Disney World Marathon on January 9, 2005, Joe Scott is training to complete yet another marathon in Miami on January 30, 2005. Less than 1% of the population has ever done the 26.2-mile endurance event. So this a tough enough schedule for anybody, but what makes Joe even more special is that he is also a cancer survivor! Joe’s goal is to become the first cancer survivor to complete 2 full marathons in 3 weeks! Several years ago, Joe was diagnosed with Cancer – Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, stage 3 of 4. The cancer was wide spread across his chest, in his neck, and in his abdomen. The doctors put him on chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Doctors also told him if the treatments did not work, he would only have about 6 months to live. Joe endured a year of painful chemotherapy & radiation treatments, and all their terrible side effects, but he survived! Joe says, “I survived because of all the support from my family, my friends, my church, and most importantly, the grace of God”. After he recovered, he felted a responsibility to help other cancer patients, and to fight back against cancer. He joined The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Team In Training” (TNT). The group trains people to do endurance events to fund cancer research. Joe is now a coach the South Miami TNT Team. Coach Joe and the TNT Team do marathons to raise money to fight cancer, and to help other cancer patients. So far this season, the team of 50 has raised over $130,000! Joe’s experience with cancer is part of his motivation. However he is also motivated by his memories of fellow cancer patients who did not survive the treatments. According to Joe, most cancer treatments are not cures. They are an endurance contest between the patient and the cancer. Only one will survive. This is why more real cancer cures are needed. More cures can be found through more research, and that takes money. Joe says, “Sure, doing a marathon, and fundraising, are extreme challenges, but not as extreme as enduring cancer, chemotherapy & radiation treatments”. So Joe is going for it again! Coach Joe’s battle creed for his team: “Let’s Kick Cancer in the Asphalt!” To sponsor Joe and/or read more about his Marathon Challenge, visit his website: www.ScottSite.com/marathon.
