Athletics: Gilreath named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Erin Gilreath has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting a world-best mark in the weight throw Friday at the UNC Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The 2004 Olympic Trials hammer throw champion, Gilreath set the world best mark in the women's weight throw of 24.11m/79 feet, 1.25 inches to win the women's weight throw event. Gilreath, the 2003 NCAA champion in the women's weight throw, bettered her own record of 23.95m/78-7 from last season on her second attempt in the competition.

Now in its fifth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

2005 USATF Athlete of the Week Winners: January 4, Amy Rudolph; January 11, Dathan Ritzenhein; January 18, Janine Davis; January 25, Wallace Spearmon Jr.; February 1, Erin Gilreath.
