Athletics: Saskatchewan to host 2005 Canadian Paralympic Championships

February 2, 2005 - Athletics Canada congratulates the Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Association and Saskatchewan Athletics for their successful bid to host the 2005 Paralympic Championships and Open Challenge. AC made the announcement this week after careful deliberation over the bids they had received from across the nation. Saskatchewan’s bid eventually stood alone as the winner and, as a result, from July 22 to 24, Regina will be the host of the second annual Canadian Paralympic Championships.

The inaugural event under this name was held last August in Edmonton on the campus of the University of Alberta and was a successful event. Before last year, the event was named The Toronto Challenge and the hosting of the event was exclusive to the city of Toronto. The bidding process to host the event each year will mean spreading the championships around the country and will allow Canada’s top Paralympic athletes to perform and bring awareness of their sport to different communities each year. Many of the country’s top stars will be participating and there is much to look forward to coming off a tremendously successful Paralympic Games in Athens last season. Congratulations to Saskatchewan and good luck to all the athletes involved.
