Triathlon: Women expected out in force for the Fresh Choice Women's Triathlon

Entries are now open for the Southern Lakes Fresh Choice Women's Triathlon to be held on 12 March at Lake Hayes Pavilion. This is a hugely popular event attracting women from as far as Invercargill, Te Anau, Dunedin, Christchurch and Wanaka.

Since its inception 11 years ago, the Fresh Choice Women's Triathlon has created the opportunity for women to compete in a race with a relaxed atmosphere. Race Director Geoff Hunt was overwhelmed with last year's record number of 250 women taking part.

"It is great to see so many women keen to get out and give it a go. Our emphasis is on participation and for the women to enjoy themselves as they travel around the course together. It is more of a social event with everyone congratulated on completing their sections".

The distances are all quite achievable as an individual or as a team. The race starts with a 300m swim or 2km kayak in Lake Hayes followed by a 15km bike ride along Lake Hayes and Speargrass Flats Road and a 5km walk or run. Last year the fastest individual Katherine Eustace crossed the line in 51 minutes and the slowest individual in 1 hour 40 minutes.

The 2004 Business House team trophy went to CivicCorp staff team, and this category is expected to be hotly contested on the day by local business teams. There are early indications that Locations Real Estate and Real Journeys will be entering a few teams each this year.

Entry will be open right up until the day of the event and categories include individual, team, business house and veteran. Entry forms are available from Fresh Choice, sports shops or by contacting Southern Traverse event management.

Women in Business Supporting Women in Sport include Over the Top Helicopters, Real Journeys, Paper Plus, Out There Clothing, The Cow, Core-3 Down Jackets, Alpine Sports, Cutting Edge Hair Design, Elysium, Thomas's Hotel on the Waterfront, More FM, and Kawarau Jet.
