Posted: March 1, 2005 Triathlon: "Best Of The US Amateur Triathlete Competition" Welcomes Escape From Fort Delaware As Delaware & New Jersey State Qualifier (St. Paul, MN--3/01/05) The Escape From Fort Delaware Triathlon will host the "Best of the US Amateur Triathlete Competition's" Delaware and New Jersey State Qualifiers. The international distance event is slated for June 18 and the fastest male and female amateur residents of both Delaware and New Jersey will earn the right to race against the winners of the other 48 state qualifiers at the "Best of the US Championship" in Gilford, NH on August 20. Race participants will "join" the 52 escapees of Fort Delaware, the Civil War prison located on Pea Patch Island in the middle of the Delaware River separating Delaware and New Jersey. They'll take a boat shuttle out to the fort and enter the river through a gun arch created by re-enactment soldiers. The blast of a Civil War cannon will launch the event. The swim finish is in Delaware and 40 scenic kilometers of cycling and 10 kilometers of running later, the athletes finish on historic Clinton Street in Delaware City.
