Posted: March 21, 2005 Athletics:Runner's World Earns Two National Magazine Award Nominations Nominations cap "triple crown" week, on the heels of #1 ranking on Adweek Hot List and Creative Team of the Year award NEW YORK - (March 18, 2005) - Rodale's Runner's World magazine has been named a finalist by the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) for two National Magazine Awards (known as "The Ellies"), the industry's highest editorial honor. VP/Editor-In-Chief David Willey and his staff were nominated in the Leisure Interests category for their work on the Runner's World Shoe Guides from the September 2004 and December 2004 issues, as well as in the Magazine Section category for "Warmups," the front-of-the-book mega-section that combines service, lively writing, brilliant design and distinctive photography to speak to "core" readers as well as to beginning runners. The NMA nominations, the first in Runner's World's 39-year history, cap an eventful, "triple crown" week for the magazine, which on Monday was ranked #1 on Adweek's prestigious annual 10 Under 50 "Hot List," which determines magazine momentum in the advertising marketplace. That same day, Adweek named Runner's World's design team of Art Director Robert Festino, Photo Editor Don Kinsella and Senior Designer Eric Paul its Creative Team of the Year among all magazines. "It's an incredible honor to be recognized by our peers in ASME," said Willey. "It's especially rewarding because our two nominations are for work collectively done by so many talented, hard working writers, editors and staffers here. I'm proud to be a part of this team." "This has been an historic week for Runner's World," added VP/Publisher Andy Hersam. "Earning the respect of your industry peers is not always easy, so to get such acclaim for our editorial, advertising, circulation and design efforts within mere days of each other is almost epic." Of the 111 nominations, only 20 magazines received more than one. Runner's World and Sports Illustrated (three nominations) were the only sports titles with multiple nominations. The 40th annual National Magazine Award will be awarded on Wednesday, April 13 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. The awards honor print and online magazines with consistently superior execution of stated editorial objectives, innovative editorial techniques, noteworthy journalistic enterprise, and imagination and vigor in layout and design. Established in 1966, the National Magazine Awards is the preeminent program in the magazine industry to honor editorial excellence. The awards program is sponsored by ASME, in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Finalists were chosen by a panel of 195 judges from among the 1,562 entries submitted by 318 print and online publications.
