Posted: April 4, 2005 Athletics: USATF Long Distance Running Notes - April 2-3, 2005 Kastor Sets Pending U.S. Women's 8 km Record After just missing the American Women's record for 8 km at last weekend's USA 8 km Championship in New York City, Deena Kastor added the record to her collection at the LaSalle Bank Shamrock Shuffle in Chicago this weekend. Running 24:36 and placing 20th overall in the combined field, Kastor finished nearly a minute ahead of Russia's Tatyana Petrova on her way to eclipsing the 14 year old record of 25:02 held by Lynn Jennings. The men's race saw Brian Sell of The Hansons-Brooks Distance Project repeat as champion, defeating Leszek Biegala of Poland by two seconds, 23:17 to 23:19. Fellow Colorado resident Jason Hubbard rounded out the top ten in the men's race which was won for the third time by Dejene Berhanu of Ethiopia in 13:10. Australia's Craig Mottram was 2nd in 13:20. In the women's race, 2005 IAAF World Cross Country Champion Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia tied Paula Radcliffe's World Record of 14:51 as she defeated Isabella Ochichi of Kenya. U.S. runners Erika Aklufi and Carrie Messner finished 7th and 8th.
