Posted: April 7, 2005 Triathlon: Smith & Shapiro Favored At "Best Of The Us Amateur Triathlete Competition" Virginia Qualifier (St. Paul, MN - 4/03/05) The venerable Columbia Triathlon, slated for May 22 in Ellicott City, MD, is the official Virginia Qualifier for the inaugural "Best of the US Amateur Triathlete Competition." The fastest male and female amateur Virginia residents will advance to the "Best of the US Championships" in picturesque Gilford, NH on August 20, where they'll race head-to-head with the winners of the other 49 state qualifiers. For more information on the Columbia Triathlon, visit www.tricolumbia.org or www.bestoftheustriathletes.com. In order to insure that all states will be represented at the Championship, a 5-deep passdown system will be in effect. If the "Best of the US.." state champion is unable to attend the championship, his or her slot will be offered to the next in line, and so on. Below is some biographical information on Stephen Smith of Reston, and Margaret Shapiro of Annadale, who are strong favorites to win the Virginia Qualifier. STEPHEN SMITH (35, Reston) Smith was a consideree for USAT Male Triathlete of the Year in 2004, thanks to his major wins at the New York City Triathlon and the US Half Championships. Other '04 highlights included his 3rd place finishes at Half Floridian and the Virginia Duathlon, and his 7th at Columbia, where he was the 2nd overall amateur and 1st Virginian. MARGARET SHAPIRO (27, Annandale) Runner-up for USAT Female Triathlete of the Year in 2002, Margaret earned Honorable Mention status for that honor last year as well. She is a two-time winner of the Columbia Triathlon (2004 & 2002) and her resume also includes a silver medal effort at the 2002 World Triathlon Championships, where she finished 3rd overall. Shapiro cracked the top five last year at the USAT National Age Group Championships. Comment on this story. |
