According to the United States Olympic Committee, the road to the Beijing Olympics was to begin this June in Seattle. But that road was closed yesterday when the USOC received word that the Pacific Rim Sports Summit, scheduled for June 7-12 in the Seattle area, would be cancelled.

Billed primarily as an international multi-sport match with teams from the U.S., China and Russia, the competition was beset with funding and sponsorship problems from the outset. It was rumored in recent weeks that several sports, including track & field, had already been cancelled. The plug on the entire event was finally pulled yesterday (14-April).

"Based on the decision of the Seattle Organizing Committee to dissolve and cancel the event, the USOC has begun working with the affected athletes, National Governing Bodies and National Olympic Committees to create alternatives that will meet their sport performance objectives," a statement from the USOC read.

Olympic 100 meter champion Justin Gatlin and U.S. pole vault national record holder Stacy Dragila, the 2000 Olympic champion, were among the high profile track & field athletes mentioned as participants in the Summit's advance promotional materials.

The proposed dates of the competition primarily impacted one major meet on the international calendar, the Golden Spike Super Grand Prix in Ostrava, Czech Republic, scheduled for Thursday, June 9. The NCAA Championships also take place that weekend.

The USOC has asked for an assurance by the organizing committee that it will refund all revenue held in escrow from ticket sales to ticket holders. Anyone who has purchased tickets any of the sports events associated with the Pacific Rim Sports Summit should contact the Seattle Organizing Committee for refund information at (206) 903-6850.
