Posted: April 22, 2005 Athletics: O'Sullivan Tops Haughian Memorial Race On Sunday From David Monti (c) 2004 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved RaceResultsWeekly.com By Bob Ramsak Sonia O'Sullivan of Ireland and several top British runners will compete in "Sam's Run," a memorial race to honor runner Sam Haughian on Sunday in west London's Bushey Park. Haughian, a 2002 Commonwealth Games finalist in the 5000 meters, was killed in a car accident during a training stint in South Africa in April 2004, less than three months before his 25th birthday. O'Sullivan, who finished eighth at last Sunday's Flora London Marathon with a personal best 2:29:01, will be joined by reigning British cross country champions Glynn Tromans and Hayley Yelling. Former British distance running greats Brendan Foster and David Moorcroft have also entered the event. Described as a competitive training race, the approximately 10 kilometer course will wind follow several paths and trails of the park, known as one of the runner's favorite training areas. A member of several national UK teams, Haughian had track bests of 7:57.24 in the 3000 meters and 13:19.45 in the 5000. Comment on this story. |
