Athletics:BolderBOULDER Races to Keep Cell Phones Out of the Landfill

BOULDER, Colo. - (April 21, 2005) - Since its inception a year ago, the BolderBOULDER's used cell phone collection has amassed over 1,000 pounds of used cell phones and accessories and is still going strongly. For every cell phone collected, a donation is made to the city of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department's Youth Services Initiative. The initiative helps low-income children participate in recreation programs such as camps and sports, and benefit from educational assistance and a variety of other support services. So far, the collection has raised more than $2000 for the Youth Initiative.

"The cell-phone recycling program has been a huge success, both in terms of reducing waste and in contributing to this great program for youth. We expect donations to continue to grow, as more of our participants become aware of the program and learn the environmental risks associated with dumping used phones in our landfills," says Race Director Cliff Bosley. "It's a win-win program all around and we are happy to run with it."

Cell phones are currently being collected at BolderBOULDER stores located in FlatIron Crossing Mall (upper level, next to Old Navy) and at 1955 Broadway in Boulder (just South of the Pearl Street Mall). Cell phones can also be dropped off in the collection bins at several City of Boulder Parks and Recreation facilities:

- East Boulder Community Center, 5660 Sioux Dr
- North Boulder Recreation Center, 3170 Broadway
- South Boulder Recreation Center, 1360 Gillaspie Dr
- Boulder Center for Sports Medicine, 311 Mapleton Ave
- Flatirons Golf Course, 5706 Arapahoe Ave

Drop off locations are also accepting chargers, batteries, cases and other accessories. They have no value for the donation program; however, they will be recycled in the appropriate manner.

The U.S. census bureau estimates that there are at least 159 million cell phone subscribers in the U.S. alone. With the average cell phone being retired in 18 months, cell phone recycling has become an increasingly more important means of dealing with what the EPA labels hazardous waste.
