Posted: April 22, 2005 Athletics: Olympic silver medalist Lauryn Williams to compete at Penn Relays Williams will compete Saturday, April 30 at USA vs. The World at the Penn Relays, the first stop of USA Track & Field’s 2005 Outdoor Visa Championship Series. At the age of 20, Williams announced herself as new sprint royalty at the 2004 Olympic Games, where she won the silver medal in a personal-best time of 10.96 seconds. It was the crowning moment of a breakthrough year for the 5-3, 110-pound sprinter from the University of Miami, who has since joined the professional ranks. She had given an indication of what was to come at the NCAA Championships earlier that spring when she ran a then world-leading 10.97 seconds to take the collegiate title. She went on to place third at the Olympic Trials (11.10), securing her spot for Athens. Williams was no overnight sensation, however. She had been making her mark on the international scene since 2002, when she won the world junior 100m title and took silver in the 4x100m relay. She was the gold medalist in both events at the 2003 Pan Am Games. For a full bio of Lauryn Williams, visit the Athlete Bios section of USATF.org.
