Posted: April 22, 2005 Athletics: GOLD ZONE to feature elite athletes at Kansas Relays In a brand new three-hour format named the GOLD ZONE, more than 100 elite athletes will compete at the 78th Kansas Relays on April 23. The event will feature an impressive array of athletes, who'll compete from 2-5 p.m., Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Lawrence. Events to take place during the GOLD ZONE include the finals of all dashes, the 4x100 and 4x400 relay finals, the invitational high jumps and pole vaults, the women's steeplechase and the men's mile run. Featured athletes highlighting the GOLD ZONE include Maurice Greene, Marion Jones, Nick Hysong, Inger Miller, Jearl Clark and Savatheda Fynes. Local Olympians include Muna Lee from Kansas City, Mo; Charlie Gruber of Lawrence, Kan; Derrick Peterson of Columbia, Mo; and Melvin Lister from Leavenworth, Kan. The 2005 adidas Track Classic will take place in Carson, Calif., on May 22, and will be televised on ESPN from 4-6 p.m. Eastern Time. Entering its third year, the popular annual event will feature more than 80 of the world's top athletes including 2004 Olympic medal winners Jeremy Wariner, Maurice Greene and Allyson Felix.
