Posted: May 5, 2005 Multisport: Dublin City Duathlon Race Report Last night's Dublin Duathlon organised by Belpark was a night when the big names delivered big performances with Aidan Woods and Caroline Kearney in control of their race from start to finish. With a massive turnout of 140 competitors, the conditions were perfect for the big names to make an assault on the course record. Caroline Kearney duly smashed the injured Anna Frankland's record by forty seconds, however, Brian Crinions' record for the Mens' event remains for the moment. The current national Duathlon champion Aidan Woods and national marathon champion Gary Crossan sped away from the group from the start with only Dave Corcoran managing to keep them in sight. As Woods charged out of transition he made sure of the lead as Gary's limited winter bike training left him adrift. Dave Corcoran dug in to overtake Crossan and close the gap to Woods somewhat but it was former race winner Mick Macken who had a storming bike split moving him up from tenth after the run to third overall off the bike and back into contention. Meanwhile Caroline Kearney was taking charge of the ladies race with a superb bike handling display leaving Piranha's Elena Maslova and Caron Mullen to fight it out for second spot. Following a super slick second transition from Dave Corcoran, he battled to close down Aidan Woods' lead but it was Woods' relaxed running style which kept him clear of Corcoran into the finishing straight. Gary Crossan could see Dave Corcoran down the top straight but he had left himself too much to do as he overtook Mick Macken to finish in third place in what was a fantastic race at the front end. A superb bike split by Caroline Kearney was enough to deny Maslova, who's fluid running and speedsuit kept Caron Mullen at bay. This sets us up nicely for the next race when students Liam Dunne and Bren Smith return after exams and Brian Crinion also returns. Kearney's record will prove tough to beat but there are a number of men who fancy their chances of breaking the elusive 39:15. The next race in the duathlon series is on Weds June 1st at 7.45pm in the Phoenix Park, all are welcome with entries taken on the night.
