Triathlon: Tri-Dubai Wins Wildflower, Challenged Athletes Foundation Reaps Rewards

Boulder, Colorado – Simon Lessing's legs did the running and, ultimately, the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) did the winning at the 2005 Wildflower Half-Ironman, Saturday, April 30 in Monterey County, California. Based on Lessing's win, and Heather Fuhr finishing second in the women’s race, Tri-Dubai presented a check for $10,000 to CAF. Tri-Dubai had teamed up with CAF before the race, committing to a donation to the foundation based on the team’s results. When Tri-Dubai’s Lessing and Fuhr hit the podium, CAF hit the jackpot.

"It was good to come out and do well at Tri-Dubai's first major North American race. I am especially pleased that my win today means the team has made a significant donation to CAF," said Lessing. CAF allows physically challenged athletes to reach their goals by providing direct support that pays for specialized equipment, training, and competition expenses. The organization is committed to helping physically challenged individuals live fuller, more active lives through sport. "I love the idea that Tri-Dubai is made up of amazing athletes who are great for our sport," said Bob Babbitt, publisher of Competitor magazine, and one of CAF's founders. "What makes Tri-Dubai even more impressive is their desire to support groups like CAF through their racing. What they're doing creates a unique bond between the Tri-Dubai athletes, the age-groupers and the charities that benefit from their support. I think it's a wonderful program!"

With scorching-fast sub-6:00/mile splits on the run, Lessing brought home Tri-Dubai's second major win of April - Kate Major won Arizona Ironman on April 9th - while teammates Normann Stadler and Chris Legh rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively. Fuhr raced a steady and measured event, trailing only an on-form Samantha McGlone through the California countryside. Tri-Dubai is a professional triathlon super-team made up of elite triathletes from all over the world. Sponsored by the Royal Family of Dubai, UAE, the team focuses on generating international attention for Dubai as a world-class tourist and business destination, and sharing success by partnering with local charities at designated competitions. Tri-Dubai is managed by The Human Interest Group, Inc.
