Posted: May 11, 2005 Athletics: Powell, Wariner Set For Ostrava By Bob Ramsak, Track Profile © 2005 Track Profile all rights reserved TrackProfile.com Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell and Olympic 400 meter champion Jeremy Wariner will begin their European season campaigns at the Golden Spike Super Grand Prix in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on Thursday, June 9, organizers announced this week. Powell, whose only loss in 2004 came in the 100 meter final of the Olympic Games, dashed to a world-leading 9.84 clocking at last weekend's Jamaica International in Kingston to join Donovan Bailey and Bruny Surin as the third-fastest sprinter ever. [For more on Powell's race, see TPR #275.] Wariner, who lost two early season races to training partner Darold Williamson, will make his first-ever European circuit start in Ostrava. "Everything will be new for me," said Wariner, whose 44.00 performance in the Olympic final was the fastest in the world since world record holder Michael Johnson, who is Wariner's agent, last ran under 44 seconds in 2000. "I need to go to European meetings and learn a lot of things." The meet record in the event is 44.70, set by Alberto Juantorena in 1976, just before the Cuban captured the Olympic 400 and 800 meter titles. Ronald Pognon of France, the European record holder indoors at 60 meters, was also announced in the 100. Two weeks ago, the young Frenchman lowered his personal best to 10.09. Leslie Djhone, also of France, will face Wariner. Djhone was the only European to qualify for the Olympic final last year, where he finished seventh. Other events feature Czech javelin legend Jan Zelezny who will face American record holder Breaux Greer; Brigitte Foster of Jamaica against U.S. indoor champion Danielle Carruthers in the 100 meter hurdles; and Olympic gold and silver medallists in the decathlon Roman Sebrle and Bryan Clay squaring off in a triathlon competition that will include the 110 meter hurdles, long jump and shot put.
