Athletics: 2005 World Masters Games Surpasses Target of 16,000 Athletes

Five Days To Final Registration Close – May 20

Edmonton, Alberta – As of today, more than 16,000 athletes have registered for the Edmonton 2005 World Masters Games and organizers expect that number to continue to grow until the final registration close on May 20.

“Based on previous Games, and the size and capacity of the Alberta capital region, we set a target to have at least 16,000 athletes register,” said Barry Anderson, Games Executive Director. “We’re delighted to have reached this goal with still two weeks left to the registration deadline. Other games have seen a flood of thousands of entries right near the registration close. In a couple of weeks we will know just how many people will be gathering in Edmonton this July for the largest international multi-sport event in the world.”

To date athletes are coming from 70 countries. Currently, international registration is approaching 40 per cent. Edmonton Economic Development has projected the Games’ economic impact on Edmonton to be more than $15 million, with the impact for Alberta projected at more than $31 million.

“Some sports are filling up,” added Anderson. “There’s no time to wait to register. We like to say you’re never too old … but you might be too late.” All athletes registered for the Games by May 20th are entered for chance to win a trip to the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games. The trip includes airfare, hotel and two paid athlete registrations.

The 6th World Masters Games will be held in the Edmonton area from July 22-31. It will be the largest World Masters Games held in North America. Recreational and elite athletes 25 years of age and up can choose to compete in 27 sports. Passion qualifies you. The Games offers 10 days of world-class sport competition, and social and cultural festivities that celebrate sport for life.
