Posted: May 18, 2005 Multisport: Dartmouth Triathlon Gaining Serious Momentum 2005-05-17 -- Halifax- Nova Scotia: The 2005 Investors Group Triathlon is shaping up to be one of Canada’s elite Triathlon events. Scheduled for Sunday, July 3rd, at Lake Banook in Dartmouth, the Triathlon is in its 7th year of operation. Built as a grass root & community event, this Triathlon is now hosting the 2005 Canadian Sprint Triathlon Championship!! Andrew McDonald, first back to back winner (2003 & 2004) has already confirmed his participation and is looking forward to put his “champion title” on the line once again. The 36 years old Military Medical Student is certainly one of the favorite to win the overall winner in the Age Group category. Last year’s female winner, Rachelle Fox, hasn’t confirmed her participation, but organizers certainly expect to have a very competitive female Age Group category once again. “This year event will also attract Elite Triathletes across the country” says Sylvain Morin, Race Director. “Every year we always witness a large group of athletes participating in their first triathlon. And, this year, they will also be competing with some of the very best in Canada”. “This Canadian Championship formula will certainly make for a very exciting event.” Morin continued. Over the past few years the event registered over 245 participants, based on the registration to date we expect to well exceed our projection of 275 participants for this year’s event. One of the big draw of the event is the participation of local triathlon Clubs, which facilitate training and coaching to all interested in taking part in a triathlon. Mr. Morin, also explained that many of the new comers are registered members with local Triathlon Clubs, and see this event as their primary goal. Ken Grandy, President of Halifax Triathlon Club mention: “Most of our club members are in their first year as triathletes, and are not only looking forward to this event, but are actually training and using this event as their personal goals & objectives.” Triathlons are also a growing spectator sport, “Each year we see the crowds of supporters grow. Last year we had almost a thousand excited fans on hand to cheer on their friends, and family and all the competitors. This year’s numbers should prove quite interesting”, Morin continued. By building on a successful formula, the 2005 mandate is to attract and initiate new athletes and supporters to participate in this exciting, challenging and evolving sport.
