Posted: May 18, 2005 Athletics: McLain named USATF Athlete of the Week INDIANAPOLIS - Erica McLain has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting an American junior record in the women's triple jump Sunday at the 2005 Pacific-10 Championships at UCLA's Drake Stadium. McLain, a freshman at Stanford, leaped 13.78 meters/45 feet, 2.5 inches to win the women's triple jump crown. A two-time World Junior Championships team member, McLain bettered Brittany Daniels' American junior record of 13.71m/44-11.75 set at the 2004 USA Junior Track & Field Championships in College Station, Texas. McLain's performance also was a freshman school record and the second-best mark in Stanford history. A Plano, Texas native, McLain became the second Stanford athlete since Jackie Edwards in 1992 to win a Pac-10 title in the women's long jump. World-leading performances were posted last week by 2004 World Junior Championships double gold medalist Kerron Clement who won the men's 400m hurdles in 48.29 seconds at the SEC Outdoor Championships. At the Georgia Tech Invitational, Sandra Glover won the women's 400m hurdles (54.01), while Georgia Tech junior and 2004 Olympian Chaunte Howard won the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.95m/6-4.75. Now in its fifth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website.
