In this role, Dr. Spriet is responsible for providing strategic counsel on GSSI educational programs and will lead Canadian-specific research.

Dr. Spriet is a professor in the Department of Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario. He is an active researcher in a number of areas of exercise physiology, particularly skeletal muscle metabolism during aerobic and sprint exercise and also following exercise training.

GSSI Canada is an organization dedicated to helping athletes optimize their health and performance through research and education in hydration and nutrition science. The Institute’s educational efforts are focused on enhancing the performance and well-being of athletes. The first research project, planned for the fall of 2005, will study the effects of cold weather on fluid and electrolyte loss during physical activity.

Dr. Spriet’s research has appeared in numerous scientific journals, including American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Applied Physiology, and Journal of Physiology. He received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology at the University of Waterloo, his master’s degree in exercise physiology from York University in Toronto, and his doctorate degree in medical sciences from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
