Posted: May 25, 2005 Athletics: Godina named USATF Athlete of the Week INDIANAPOLIS - John Godina has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting a world-leading mark and personal best in the men's shot put Sunday at the adidas Track Classic in Carson, California. A two-time Olympic medalist and three-time world outdoor champion, Godina enjoyed the best performance of his career in winning the ADT men's shot put with a world-leading throw of 22.20 meters/72 feet, 10 inches. Godina, who posted his previous career best of 22.02m/72-3 back in 1999, held the previous world-leading mark this season with a toss of 21.83m/71-7.50 when he earned the inaugural Visa Champion title. Others posting world-leading performances at the adidas Track Classic include two-time Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Wariner, who won the adidas men's 400 meters in 44.53 seconds; Olympic silver medalist Allyson Felix won the women's 200m in 22.14 seconds; Olympic gold medalist Joanna Hayes won the 100m hurdles in 12.64 seconds and 2003 U.S. 400m hurdles champion Bershawn Jackson posted a personal best to win the 400m hurdles in 47.62 seconds. In addition, 2004 Olympian Lashinda Demus ran a world-leading time of 53.56 to win the 400m hurdles in Belem, Brazil. Now in its fifth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website.
