Athletics: Canyonlands Half Marathon Gives $25,000 to Moab

MOAB, Utah - At a reception on May 16, Rim Rock Roadrunners, the organizers of the Canyonlands Half Marathon and Five Mile Run celebrated with local non-profit groups the race organization's donation of $25,000 to the Moab community. The funds were generated from direct proceeds from the race as well as two silent auctions for race entries.

The Canyonlands races are an annual spring event that draws over 4,000 runners to Moab. This year was the 30th Anniversary of the popular course, which follows the Colorado River under beautiful red rock cliffs.

"We are committed to giving back to our community, which is so supportive of our race," says Rim Rock Roadrunner director Ranna Bieschke.

Seekhaven Family Crisis and Resource Center and The Humane Society of Moab Valley each received checks for $7,500.

"We chose these two organizations this year as our designated charities because they both offer protection to those in critical need," stated Bieschke.

The Humane Society will use their money to help finance the new animal shelter and continue programs such as pet adoption, feral cat program and the spay and neuter clinics. Seekhaven Board President Teresa Wyatt stated their funds would go towards a Hispanic Outreach Program for Children and Adults.

An additional $8,500 was donated to a variety of local groups in appreciation for the volunteers they provided to the race.

Rim Rock Roadrunners also donated $1,500 to a $35,000 trust fund they established in 2002 for scholarships for track/cross county graduating seniors.

Bieschke also thanked the runners for their role in helping Moab. "Their participation enables us to help all these wonderful organizations," she said.
