Athletics: McDonnell and Kosgei Earn District Honors

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas head coach John McDonnell and sophomore Peter Kosgei were named the South Central District Outdoor Coach and Athlete of the Year, respectively, as announced by the United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA).

“I’m happy for Peter (Kosgei) and he definitely deserves that award,” Arkansas head coach John McDonnell said. “His performance at the SEC Championships was outstanding. It’s always nice when your peers recognize you and in my case having a great staff and athletes makes it easy.” McDonnell has seen his Razorbacks excel all year as they have produced fast times and quality marks. Three school records have already been broken and McDonnell is sending a record 26 athletes to compete at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships.

Kosgei has had a fantastic outdoor campaign that included winning the Commissioner’s Trophy at the SEC Championships for being the meet’s individual high scorer. The Kapsabet, Kenya native racked up 26 points after he captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter titles. He also finished third in the 1,500 meters. His performances were crucial in helping Arkansas claim the team trophy.

This weekend at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships Kosgei will compete in the steeplechase and he is 10 seconds faster than anyone in the field. He already earned an NCAA automatic qualification in the 10,000 meters with his school record time of 28:08.97 from the Stanford Invitational.
