Athletics: 6-Year Record Broken In Women’S MDS Nordion 10 K Race

Record participation in both 10K and 5K races

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – A 16-year course record was shattered today at the MDS Nordion 10K in the women’s field as 24-year old Grace Momanyi of Kenya crossed the finish line with a time of 31:24.4. The previous course record (32:11) was established in 1989 by Albertina Dias. Morrocan Asmae Leghzaoui and Kenyan Teresa Wanjiku followed closely with a time of 31:28.3 and 32:33.0 respectively. The fastest Canadian was registered by Calgary’s Lisa Harvey who finished fifth overall with a time of 33:53.8.

Fast times were also recorded in the men’s field as Kenyan George Kirwa Misoi finished with a time of 28:55.7, followed by fellow countryman Reuben Chebii (29:07.8) and Burundi native Jean-Claude Nduwingoma (29:09.1). Jeremy Deere was the top Canadian to finish, 10th overall with a time of 30:15.5.

The MDS Nordion Saturday Race Day – part of the Ottawa Race Weekend - also recorded new records in participation as the MDS Nordion 5K race welcomed 5,499 running enthusiasts while the MDS Nordion 10K had 6,522 participants, for a total of 12,021 compared to a total of 9,860 participants in 2004’s events.

3rd place: Jean-Claude Nduwingona, Burundi, 29:09.1
2nd place: Ruben Chebbi, Kenya, 29:07.8
1st place: George Kirwa Misoi, Kenya, 28:55.7

WOMEN

10th place: Rebecca Stallwood, Burlington, Canada, 36:01.2
9th place: Mimi Fallon, Walpole (USA), 35:54.0
8th place: Tania Jones, Richmond Hill, Canada, 35:41.6
7th place: Leah Pells, Coquitlam, Canada, 34:39.4
6th place: Anastasia Ndereba, Kenya, 34:16.9
5th place: Lisa Harvey, Calgary, Canada, 33:53.8

About The Ottawa Race Weekend
The National Capital Race Weekend, Canada's premier running festival, combines competition, participation and fundraising to make a distinctive contribution to the health of the community. The Race Weekend has over 23,000 participants in nine races, including the ING Ottawa Marathon. It is run by a volunteer Board of Directors.
