Athletics: UA's Spearmon Named to SEC Good Works Team

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Standout Razorback sprinter Wallace Spearmon Jr., was named to the Southeastern Conference’s Men’s Track and Field Good Works Team as announced by the league office on Tuesday. The Good Works Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his community in superior service efforts.

Even though Spearmon has excelled athletically that hasn’t prevented him from contributing his time to different causes in the community. The Fayetteville, Ark., native is an active participant in the Book Hogs Reading Program and has read to local students at several different elementary schools. He also helped encourage students for a contest to read the most books by posing for pictures and signing autographs for the winners at a recognition banquet.

During his time at Arkansas Spearmon was a member of three national championship teams and captured four NCAA titles and seven All-America honors. At this year’s indoor national meet in Fayetteville he set the American 200-meter record with a time of 20.10 to take the tape.

Most recently at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif., he blazed to a world-leading 200-meter time of 19.91, becoming the seventh fastest collegiate on the all-time list. His clocking allowed him to successfully defend his title and reclaim the school record. Spearmon also ran the second leg of the 4x100-meter relay team that claimed Arkansas’ first championship in the event with a school record time of 38.49.

This weekend he will have his sights set on the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Carson, Calif. Spearmon must finish in the top three in order to gain a spot on Team USA for the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
