Posted: June 21, 2005 Athletics: USATF Long Distance Running Notes - June 18-19, 2005 New Alliance New Haven Road Race The next stop on the USA Running Circuit (USARC) is The New Alliance New Haven Road Race. Hosting the 2005 USA 20 km Championships for the 13th year for men and the fifth year for women, the race announced last week that the prize purse offered for this year's race will be a total of $36,650 for U.S. Athletes. The race will also be used as the final selection race for the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, which will be held in Edmonton, Canada on October 1. Available prize money and bonus in the USA 20 km Championships. Masters Women: 1:12:39 (2002, Linda Somers Smith) The USARC is a USA Track & Field road series, featuring USA Championships from 5 km to the marathon and attracts the best U.S. distance runners. The eleventh edition for the men and tenth for the women, the 2005 circuit has nine events for men and seven events for women. The first ten U.S. runners earn points at each USARC race (15 for first, 12 for second, 10 for third, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1), with a final $12,500 grand prix purse ($6000, $4000, and $2500) for the top three men and women point scorers overall. The USARC points at the USA Marathon Championships will be doubled. Sell now leads the men's circuit with 31 points and Jen Rhines leads the women's with 27. The mission of the USA Running Circuit is to showcase, support, and promote U.S. runners. Since its inception in 1995, the USARC and its races have provided over $4 million dollars to U.S. distance runners. Who Is The World's Best Race Director? Road Race Management Newsletter, MarathonFoto and Running Times will again honor the outstanding race director of the year. The 2005 award winner will be announced at the Road Race Management Race Directors' Meeting in October. Eligibility: Any Race Director, Coordinator or Chief Executive or Chief Operating Officer of a race. You may nominate yourself. Previous winners are not eligible. Criteria for Selection: Nominations must be received by September 2 2005. Nominees will be judged on several factors, including overall ability, reputation of race, sponsor relations, creativity, and organizational ability. For more information visit www.rrm.com Masters Athlete Feature - Pope living on run Chances are better than good that no Mississippi athlete has accomplished more in his or her sport recently than Oxford's long and lean Brian Pope, a 42-year-old distance runner.Nevertheless, chances are just as good that Pope could jog around the busy Oxford Square for hours and not more than a few folks in his own hometown would recognize him.Pope has set two national masters (over 40) records and won national championships at several different distances.
