Posted: July 10, 2005 Triathlon: National Sprint Triathlon Championships Sets New Record 2005-07-04 -- Halifax, Nova Scotia:
Kyle Jones and Suzanne Weckend, Winners of this year's Sprint Championships. The 2005 Canadian Sprint Triathlon Championships were held Sunday, July 3rd, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This year’s race had a record number of participants, and can now be considered the largest triathlon event in Atlantic Canada. The Investors Group Triathlon was the host for this year’s event, and was under the direction of Sylvain Morin, the Race Director. This is a new Championship event for 2005. The success of this race has guaranteed that this will be a staple Championship event in the triathlon community. In a Sprint distance triathlon, athletes participate in a 750m swim, a 20km bike and then finish with a 5km run. The course involved a lake swim, a bike course with some long and gradual slopes, and a relatively flat run course. Two competitors managed to break the one hour mark. Kyle Jones (Heritage Way) placed first among the Elite Men in 59:38, followed shortly by the other sub-hour finisher, Colin Edwards (Antigonish) in 59:54. Third place went to Jason Wicke (Sudbury) in 1:00:12. Among the Elite Women, Victoria’s Suzanne Weckand managed to make it to the top of the podium in 1:06:47, followed shortly by fellow Victorian, Kerry Spearing, in 1:07:58. Julie Curwin (Sydney) followed closely to finish in third place with a time of 1:08:18.
