Posted: July 11, 2005 Athletics: Richards named USATF Athlete of the Week INDIANAPOLIS - Two-time U.S. champion Sanya Richards has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after posting consecutive victories last week on the European circuit. Already the world leader this year in the women's 400 meters, Richards' first win last week came on Tuesday when she handed 2004 Olympic gold medalist Tonique Darling of the Bahamas her first loss of the season in Lausanne, Switzerland. The 20-year-old Olympic and world championships 4x400m gold medalist pulled away in the final 100 meters to win in 49.96 seconds, with Darling the runner-up in 50.14. Richards followed that performance with a win Friday over a strong field at the Golden Gala in Rome that included reigning world champion Ana Guevara of Mexico. Richards cruised across the finish line in 49.82 seconds, well ahead of Guevara, who was the runner-up in 50.62. Another impressive performance was turned in last week by reigning U.S. champion Daniel Lincoln, who finished the men's 3,000m steeplechase at Rome in 8 minutes, 12.65 seconds in becoming the #3 all-time U.S. performer in that event. Also in Rome, former Stanford great Lauren Fleshman crossed the finish line in 15:02.52 to become the #8 all-time U.S. performer in the women's 5,000 meters and achieve the IAAF "A" standard for the World Championships. Now in its fifth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website.
