Athletics: Lethbridge’s Heather Steacy 12th in women’s hammer throw at world youth track and field championships

MARRAKESH, Morocco- Heather Steacy of Lethbridge, Alta., finished 12th on Saturday in the women’ hammer throw at the world youth track and field championships.

Bianca Perie of Romania won the gold medal with her best throw measured at 62.27. Anna Bulgakova of Russia was second at 62.05 and Dora Levai of Hungary third at 58.80. Steacy, making her world championship debut, qualified for the final on Thursday by placing fifth in her group.

Other Canadian final results were: Alexandre Gagne of Ste-Jeanne d’Arc, Que, finishing 18th in the men’s 10 kilometre walk while in the women’s heptathlon Brianne Theisen of Humboldt, Sask., finished 17th overall and Kathryn Gallagher of Courtenay, B.C., 29th.

Elizabeth Gleadle of Vancouver qualified for Sunday’s women’s javelin final placing third in her group with a 46.28 metre toss, the ninth best distance of the day. Bethanie Wachna of Windsor, Ont., was eliminated placing 10th in her group.

In the men’s 200-metre sprint, Mitchell O’Gorman of Edmonton and Jonathan Charest of St-Tite, Que., both finished second in their respective opening heats but were eliminated in their semifinal heats placing seventh and eighth.

It was a similar story in the women’s 200. Kimberly Hyacinth of La Chendie, Que., and Deanna Sullivan of St. Albert, Alta., were both third in their opening heats clocking personal bests at 24.13 and 24.69 respectively. They were eliminated in the semis with Hyacinth placing fourth in her heat and Sullivan sixth.

Canada was also eliminated in the opening round in the men’s and women’s medley relays.

Competition ends Sunday.
