If you're planning to train for the 2006 City of Los Angeles Marathon you've got two extra weeks to prepare. Organizers announced yesterday that the 21st annual edition of their marathon would be held on Sunday, March 19, two weeks later than it's traditional date, the first Sunday in March. The change was made at the request of the city because of a conflict with the Academy Awards.

On-line registration opens on Thursday, July 21 at 12:01 p.m. Pacific time, and there are some strong incentives to get in early, no matter where a runner resides. The first person to register from California will receive free entry into the race. The first person to register from another state will receive a roundtrip ticket on American Airlines to come to Los Angeles for the Marathon, and the first person from outside the United States will receive a two- night, race weekend stay at the Wilshire Grand hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.

Organizers expect to draw more than 25,000 runners from 50 states and 100 countries in 2006. The official race website is LAMarathon.com.
