Posted: July 27, 2005 Athletics: USATF Long Distance Running Notes Emily LeVan named as replacement to Helsinki marathon team Emily LeVan has been named as the most recent addition to the U.S. marathon team for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, to be held August 6-14, in Helsinki, Finland. She replaces Heather Hanscom, who withdrew due an injury. LeVan, a former field-hockey player at Bowdoin College, began her career as a marathoner in 1998. Now a nursing student at the University of Southern Maine, she recently finished 12th at the 2005 B.A.A. Boston Marathon in 2:43:14, making her the first U.S. female finisher. LeVan also won last fall's Sportshoe Maine Marathon in a personal best time of 2:39:54. For more information on the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Athletics visit USATF.org. Distance Coaching Classic to be held in Flagstaff The Center for High Altitude Training will be conducting the Distance Coaching Classic this weekend, July 28-29, in Flagstaff, Ariz. The clinic is designed to communicate the training principles that have produced recent U.S. successes and will feature presentations on Altitude Training Theory; Mental Toughness; Ancillary Training for Runners - Balance Exercise and Nutrition. Presenters will include Jack Daniels, Joe Vigil, Cory Manton, Monika Radloff, Robert Harmison, Amanda Carlson and Debbie Craig. Also, in cooperation with USA Track & Field, the Distance Coaching Classic will offer Level 3 credit for Level 2 coaches (Level 3 candidates) who attend the clinic. USATF Elite Development Club link of the week - See Jane Run See Jane Run is a competitive women's running team based in Santa Monica, Calif. The team was formed in August 2002. Through grass roots efforts the team has grown from seven members to 18 and is now a member of the USA Track & Field-certified "Elite Athlete Development Club."
