Posted: August 1, 2005 Athletics: IAAF Council Selects Stuttgart And Athens As 2006 Venues HELSINKI - IAAF Council decided to award the 10th edition of the IAAF World Cup to Athens, following a presentation from representatives of SEGAS, the Greek Athletics Federation. The IAAF World Cup - which is the only competition on the calendar for track and field teams - will now take place in the Olympic Stadium, on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 September 2006. It was agreed that Greece would be able to field a 9th team in the competition, pending modification of the existing facility. The teams contesting the World Cup will be: Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania, USA, Greece and the two top teams from the 2006 of the European Cup (Super League). Council also agreed to award the IAAF World Athletics Final to Stuttgart, for the period 2006/07/08. The event will take place in the Gottlieb Daimler stadium, which was the venue of the 1993 IAAF World Championships, and has recently been refurbished in preparation for the soccer World Cup next year. IAAF World Athletics Series Update Council approved the following Timetable for the 2006 World Race Walking Cup: Saturday, 13 May 16:00 10K Junior Men 17:15 20K Women 19:30 20K Men Sunday, 14 May 08:00 50K Men 13:00 10K Junior Women Council approved the Entry Standards for the 2006 World Junior Championships. Council approved the date of 7 October for the 2006 World Road Running Championships and will consider a request for the distance to be 20km instead of Half Marathon. Further to discussions in Doha and following a successful site visit, Council confirmed Ostrava as the venue of the 2007 World Youth Championships and the dates of competition: 18-22 July 2007. Transfer of Allegiance Council has noted the following transfers of allegiance: Nicholas Kemboi KEN to QAT Bouchra Ghezielle MAR to FRA David Hyaga KEN to QAT Irina Sustelo POR to BEL Francis Kirwa KEN to FIN Allen Simms USA to PUR Aaron Armstrong USA to TRI Kevon Pierre SKN to TRI Council Discuss Final Preparation For IAAF Congress It was announced that representatives from 209 of the IAAF’s 211 Member Federations have announced that they will participate in the 45th edition of the IAAF Congress, which runs from 2-4 August, making it the biggest gathering of sporting delegates in history. The Congress is the highest decision making body of athletics, and delegates from the IAAF’s Member Federations will be asked to consider some 300 Rule Change proposals which are on the table for approval in Helsinki. Please note that working sessions for Congress will begin at 9 a.m on 3 August.
