Posted: August 1, 2005 Triathlon: Tim Deboom Defeats Peter Reid Mano A Mano At The Vineman Half Ironman SANTA ROSA, CA. JULY 31, 2005 - Two-time World Ironman Champion Tim DeBoom defeated Tri-Dubai teammate and three-time World Ironman Champion Peter Reid by 5-minutes to capture the $5,000 "winner take all" first prize in the Mano A Mano Showdown at the Vineman Half Ironman on July 31, 2005 in Sonoma Valley, CA. DeBoom took a five-meter lead about 11-minutes into the 1.2 mile swim and never looked back as he completed the challenging Vineman course in 4:02:00, five-minutes before Reid crossed the finish line at 4:07:00. DeBoom lead by 1:02 after the swim and stretched his lead to 3:15 after the bikw. He maintained a five-minute lead for most of the final sport. "This showdown certainly lived up to the pre-race billing as Tim and Peter put on a great show for the fans and showed the world the excitement of Mano A Mano triathlon events," said Franko Vatterott, President of The Human Interest Group, the sports marketing and management firm that created the event and assembled the Tri-Dubai Professional Triathlon team. From 1999-2002, DeBoom finished in the top three in Hawaii, capturing Ironman Hawaii World Championships in 2001 and '02 after finishing third, behind Reid in 1999 and second to Reid in 2000. The 34 year-old native of Cedar Rapids, IA, currently resides in Boulder, CO, with his wife, and fellow professional triathlete Nicole DeBoom. Reid, the 35 year-old native of Victoria, BC is one of the top triathletes in the world with 10 Ironman titles. Since 1998 he has earned three Ironman Hawaii World Championships ('98, '00 & '03) and finished second twice ('99, '02). His resume also includes the third fastest Ironman ever (7:51:56) and the fastest Ironman run in history (2:35:21). The 2005 Vineman Half Ironman is one of five Half Ironman Triathlons in the USA serving as qualifiers for the 2005 Ironman World Championship Triathlon. The event consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike, and a 13.1 mile run. The point-to-point event begins at Johnson's Beach in Guerneville and takes entrants past literally hundreds of vineyards and dozens of Sonoma County wineries before it finishes up just north of Santa Rosa at Windsor High School.
