>
Elite Female winner Catriona Morrison on the run

This weekend, the biggest international triathlon ever staged in Ireland was held in Ballyronan, Co. Tyrone.

Some of the worlds top professional triathletes raced against Irelands Elites in the ETU European Cup. This race also doubled as the Irish Elite Triathlon Championships. A few hours before this race, the organisers staged the Premier League race 5, which saw over 300 of Irelands top age-group athletes race of national ranking points.

Gomez Noya of Spain won the Elite mens race with nearly a minute to spare from Allen of GBR. He was first out of the water but was caught by the main pack on the bike, but was just conserving his energy here as he did the 10k run in 32.18 to record a great win.

Catriona Morrison of Scotland went with the main pack on the bike but broke away on her own with 2 laps to go and put 2 minutes into her rivals, increasing this lead on the run by over a minute to win in a time of 2.04.08, 3.32 ahead of Gaiardelli of Italy.

16 Irish men and 1 Irish woman took part in the Elite race. They were competing for the inaugural Irish Elite Championships and those from Northern Ireland were racing for Commonwealth Games 2006 selection.

Heather Wilson from Hillsborough put in a great preformance in the womans race, finishing 5th overall, giving her important European and World ranking points, she improved her chances for Commonwealth selection and is going into next weeks European Championships in great shape. Caroline Kearney and Anna Frankland who were racing for their clubs in a French Grand Prix will also be on the Elite team for these Championships.

In the mens race, Gavin Noble was 4th out of the water and got into the lead group on the bike, Brian Campbell was next out and got inother the following group, and Trevor Woods got himself into a 3rd group. The groups all worked hard but stayed apart anf the Irish Elite men finished in that order. Gavin Noble finished 7th overall whish gives him European and World ranking points. Gavin and Brian Campbell both travel to Switzerland for the Eupropean Championships next week.
