Posted: August 16, 2005 Athletics: Gatlin named USATF Athlete of the Week INDIANAPOLIS - Justin Gatlin has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the 100m and 200m titles at the at the 2005 World Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Gatlin (Raleigh, N.C.) ran 9.88 seconds and 20.04 seconds to become the first man to win both the 100 and 200 meters, respectively, at the World Outdoor Championships since Maurice Greene accomplished the feat in 1999. Gatlin's winning margin of .17 seconds in the 100 meters was the biggest in meet history. Several Americans turned in world-leading performances - in addition to gold-medal-winning ones - at the World Outdoor Championships. They include Jeremy Wariner, who clocked 43.93 to win the men's 400m; Dwight Phillips, who leaped 8.60m/28-2.75 to win the men's long jump; and Bryan Clay, who finished with 8,732 points to win the men's decathlon. Now in its fifth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week. 2005 USATF Athlete of the Week Winners:
