Posted: August 22, 2005 Athletics: McGregor Wins Guidant Heart of Summer 10K, Sets Minnesota State Record Chesang Takes Men's Title MINNEAPOLIS - (August 20, 2005) - Katie McGregor capped her outstanding 2005 season with a dominant victory at the Guidant Heart of Summer 10K around Lake Nokomis. McGregor, the 2005 USA 10,000 champion, ran 32:17 to shatter the Minnesota state Open record (previous record was 32:52 by Olympian Janis Klecker in 1992). For her efforts, McGregor, 27, a St. Louis Park resident, earned $10,250. Four-time Olympian Colleen De Reuck, 41, of Boulder, Colo. finished a solid second in 32:53 - just over her U.S. Masters (40 and older) record 32:50 - but her time obliterated the Minnesota Masters All-Comers record (previous record was 34:32 by Russian Lyubov Kremyleva in 2002). "This was a great effort for Katie," said Team USA Minnesota coach Dennis Barker. "To win a race over a strong field on her home turf is a real highlight of her year. It was another high quality 10K coming off her 31:21 PR performance just two weeks ago at the World Championships and a good finish to her 2005 season. It's great to have a company like Guidant support distance running and women's health and we were happy to have all of our Team USA Minnesota women run in the event." Team USA Minnesota placed its five female members in the top 10 - McGregor, Jenelle Deatherage (5th), 2004 Olympian Carrie Tollefson (6th), 2003 USA Marathon champion Sara Wells (8th) and Dana Coons (10th). Mathew Chesang of Kenya won the men's race in 29:17 with New Zealand's Michael Aish second (29:33). The Guidant Heart of Summer 10K and 5K is dedicated to educating women about the role of health and fitness in the prevention of heart disease. 100% of the net proceeds from the Guidant Heart of Summer stays in the local community to support the following women's heart health initiatives: Health East, Mayo Clinic Women's Heart Clinic, Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, Park Nicollet Heart Center and WomenHeart. 2nd Guidant Heart of Summer 10K - Minneapolis, MN, Saturday, August 20, 2005 WOMEN 1) Katie McGregor, MN, 32:17*, $10,250 2) Colleen De Reuck, 41, CO, 32:53, $6500 3) Sylvia Mosqueda, CA, 33:15, $3250 4) Nicole Aish, CO, 33:34, $1750 5) Jenelle Deatherage, MN, 33:41, $1600 6) Carrie Tollefson, MN, 34:11, $1300 7) Laura Turner, WA, 34:24, $1000 8) Sara Wells, MN, 34:36, $750 9) Kayoko Obata, JPN, 34:43 10) Dana Coons, MN, 35:05, $500 11) Stephanie Bylander, CO, 35:06, $200 *previous Minnesota state Open record, 32:52, Janis Klecker, Get in Gear 10K, April 25, 1992 MASTERS Women (40+) 1) De Reuck, see above 2) Janet Robertz, 45, MN, 36:15, $500 3) Bonnie Sons, 40, MN, 36:39, $250 MEN 1) Mathew Chesang, KEN, 29:17, $1000 2) Michael Aish, NZL, 29:33, $500 3) Teren Jameson, UT, 30:15, $250 4) Chris Lundstrom, MN, 30:24, $250 MASTERS Men (40+) 1) Kevin Haas, 47, MN, 32:48, $250 For more results and information, go to: HeartofSummer.org.
