Athletics: Looking Certain - World Athletics Final Qualifiers As At 22 August

Monte-Carlo – The main programme of events of the 3rd IAAF World Athletics Final takes place in Monaco on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 September, with the men’s and women’s Hammer Throws, due to the technical constraints within the Stade Louis II, being held in Szombathely, Hungary on Saturday 3 September.

For a third year running, the prestigious World Athletics Final will close the outdoor season in impressive style with the ’best of the best’ stars of athletics competing for a first prize in each event of US $30,000, with anyone surpassing a World record receiving a US $100,000 bonus.

The start-list of the World Athletics Final is decided according to the IAAF World Rankings, with athletes who are in the top 7 positions (11 positions for the races of 1500m and over) in each event, automatically qualifying.

There are now only a few remaining major competitions at which athletes still have a real chance of qualifying for the World Athletics Final. The opportunities vary in each Event, of course, depending the disciplines to be held at the various competitions but these meetings are as follows:

3 GL Category competitions:	Brussels, Berlin and the Asian Championships
2 B Category competitions:	Linz, Rieti
3 D Category competitions:	Banská Bystrica, Dubnica nad Váhom, Rovereto

The date upon which the IAAF World Rankings are calculated with respect to the World Athletics Final, is after the final TDK Golden League meeting of 2005 which takes place this year in Berlin on Sunday 4 September, while the calculation for the Hammer Throw events is made on Sunday 28 August.

However, there are a number of athletes who because of their outstanding performances in the last twelve months are already so far ahead of their opponents in the World Rankings that we can already confidently predict that they will qualify even at this early stage.
