Commonwealth Games: Melbourne 2006 Statement on Kylie Minogue

Melbourne 2006 Executive Director of Ceremonies, Mr Andrew Walsh, today sought to clarify recent reports in relation to Kylie Minogue being approached to be involved in the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Ceremonies.

“Since Kylie was diagnosed with breast cancer, our repeatedly stated position has been that our prime – and only – concern is Ms Minogue’s well being,” Mr Walsh said.

“I want to state categorically that at no stage since she was diagnosed has anyone from Melbourne 2006 approached her to be involved in either the Opening or Closing Ceremonies, or indeed any aspect of the Games.

“The weekend speculation that Kylie has been confirmed for the Closing Ceremony is erroneous.”

Games Chairman Ronald J Walker said he agreed with Kylie’s Australian promoter, Michael Gudinski of the Frontier Touring Company, that “one would have to question the motivations of any party trying to create press coverage to the contrary.”
