Athletics: Arkansas Wins Missouri Southern Stampede; Summerside Takes Runner-up Honors

JOPLIN, Mo. – The third-ranked Arkansas cross country team had an outstanding team showing at the Missouri Southern Stampede as six Razorbacks finished in the top 10, helping UA take the team title with 23 points. Harding University was second with 119 and Tulsa tallied 137 points for third.

“All in all, we performed very well, considering the guys we left at home like Peter (Kosgei), Josphat (Boit), Shawn (Forrest) and Kenny (Cormier),” Arkansas head coach John McDonnell said. “I expected (Seth) Summerside and (Marc) Rodrigues to run well, but I was glad to see (Chris) Barnicle finish up there in his first race. He’s only going to get better as races go by.”

Junior Seth Summerside was Arkansas’ top finisher in the 8K race when he earned runner-up honors with a career-best time of 24:09. Summerside is a native of Joplin, Mo., and enjoyed competing in his hometown during his first cross country season for the Hogs.

Senior All-American Marc Rodrigues was next in third place with a clocking of 24:14. Freshman Chris Barnicle made his Razorback debut and posted a fifth-place showing in a time of 24:31. Junior Adam Perkins was close behind in sixth place with a personal-best time of 24:34. A pair of Hogs, including seniors Jose Campos and Josh Robles grabbed the seventh and eighth spots with career-best times of 24:37.2 and 24:37.8, respectively.

Sophomore Jonathan Norris finished just out of the top 10 in 13th place, while turning in a time of 24:46. Other Razorbacks competing included seniors Said Ahmed in 14th (24:50) and Luis Bordes in 15th (24:51). Junior Brian Roe, a half-miler, rounded out the Hogs with a 25:03 performance and came in 17th.

The Razorbacks will not have long to rest as they prepare to travel to New York City for the Meet of Champions. Sixth-ranked Iona College is hosting the 8K race on Sept. 24 at Van Cortlandt Park.
