Posted: September 20, 2005 Athletics: USATF Long Distance Running Notes - September 19, 2005 Record breaking day at Philadelphia Distance Run In addition to Deena Kastor's record breaking 1:07:53 at the Jefferson Hospital Distance Run, Mbarak Hussein added a pending U.S. masters record to the books as well. Hussein, of Albuquerque, N.M. ran 1:03:23 to finish ninth overall and win the masters division by nearly four minutes. The pending record eclipses the six-year old record of 1:05:11 held by John Tuttle as well as the seven-year old "aided" record of 1:03:33, held by Craig Young. Hussein, who will be eligible to compete as a U.S. citizen at the end of September, is set to compete next at the USA Marathon Championships where he is one of the pre-race favorites. The championships will be hosted by the Twin Cities Marathon on October 2, in Minneapolis, Minn. For more information visit USATF.org. Twin Cities Marathon 2005 Spectator's Guide now available Individuals interested in being among the 250,000 spectators lining the course for the 2005 USA Marathon Championships, held as part of the 24th annual Twin Cities Marathon (TCM) Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, will find it easier to enjoy the event by picking up a 2005 Spectator's Guide, available now at Cub Foods, Caribou Coffee shops, local running and sports stores, and online at www.twincitiesmarathon.org. The guide offers several tips for cheering the 10,500 marathon and TC 10 Mile participants as they wind their way through the Twin Cities. The Spectator's Guide provides a full listing of marathon weekend highlights, including: The ING Health & Fitness Expo Saturday's TCM 5K & Family Events, including races for all ages and the return of the popular Mascot Invitational The most popular viewing locations on marathon day The guide also includes detailed maps of the course, the start and finish areas, and the Saturday events on the Capitol Grounds. The 2005 Twin Cities Marathon weekend will take place September 30-October 2, 2005. The three-day weekend celebration of fitness includes a 5 km run/walk, children's fun runs, pasta dinner, health and fitness expo and TC 10 Mile in addition to the marathon. TCM will host the USA Men's and Women's Marathon Championships, and it continues its 15th consecutive year as the designated USATF National Masters Championship for both men and women. The championships are the eighth stop for the men and sixth for the women on the USA Running Circuit (USARC) a USA Track & Field road series, featuring USA Championships from 5 km to the marathon and attracts the best U.S. distance runners. The eleventh edition for the men and tenth for the women, the 2005 circuit has nine events for men and seven events for women. The first ten U.S. runners earn points at each USARC race (15 for first, 12 for second, 10 for third, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1), with a final $12,500 grand prix purse ($6000, $4000, and $2500) for the top three men and women point scorers overall. The USARC points at the USA Marathon Championships will be doubled. The mission of the USA Running Circuit is to showcase, support, and promote U.S. runners. Since its inception in 1995, the USARC and its races have provided over $4 million dollars to U.S. distance runners. USATF National Club Co-Ed 10 km Team Challenge The USATF National Club Co-Ed 10 km Team Challenge, hosted by the Race for the Taste 10K, October 9, 2005 is being held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival in Orlando, Fla. Athletes have the opportunity to compete for a minimum of $14,000 in prize money as a part of the USATF Club Co-Ed 10 km Team Challenge. In order to enter, co-ed team runners must be a currently registered Club Team with USATF. The USATF Club Co-ed 10 km Team Challenge will consist of USATF registered club teams, for more information on registering your club through your local association, visit www.usatf.org. Prize money: A minimum of $14,000 in prize money will be awarded, as follows: Open 1- $4000 2- $3000 3- $1500 4- $1000 5- $500 40+, 50+, 60+, 70+ 1- $750 2- $250 Each team will consist of a maximum of five (5) athletes, and must be made up of a maximum of three men and a minimum of two women.
