Triathlon: Carvalho thrives in threes with top finishes at Los Angeles and Santos

SANTOS, SP, Brazil (September 20, 2005) Two weeks after a hot, ninth-overall finish at the world-class Chicago Triathlon, Brazil’s Fabio Carvalho (Unimonte) again hammered top-level pros at the non-drafting Los Angeles Triathlon (1.5 km S/40 km B/6.2 km R), finishing third, in 1:52.38, behind Michael Simpson (CAN) and Richie Cunningham (AUS), respectively. A week later, this past Sunday, at home on Santos’ Atlantic coast, Carvalho led much of the fifth stage of the non-drafting, Olympic-distance Trofeu Brasil series, almost holding off superstar, fellow Santos resident and eventual winner Oscar Galindez and another national star, Santiago Acenço, and finishing third in 1:47.13.

This past weekend, just barely home from L.A., Carvalho, one of Brazil’s hot stars, still had some fire. “Even with a bad swim and being a bit tired from the trip, this was my best race of the three,” he commented.

At L.A., Carvalho powered his Softride Rocket to a second-fastest ride of the day, in 56:22. At Santos, on his new FASTT 650, he rode 53:31.8, just eight tenths of a second slower than Galindez. “I rode the Softride Rocket since 2001, and it gave me the best power transfer and ability to run, so let’s see what the new bike can do,” said Carvalho. “I really felt good against those guys and know I can beat them on the right day.”

“In the first turnaround of the bike, I saw Oscar was getting close, so I waited for him to come by and went with him and Santiago. On the second loop, Oscar picked up the pace and it was very hard. Santiago fell back and we put 30 seconds on him. In the transition from bike to run, I was faster than Oscar, ran by myself the first two kilometers until he got me, and then we ran side-by-side until 6,5 k. I fell back, Santiago was right behind us and he passed me also. For us, and for the fans, it was a great day, especially being able to stay with Oscar for so long,” said Carvalho.

“It’s only a matter of time until I get the guys here and in the U.S.,” he added. There are two more races left in the 2005 Trofeu Brasil series.
