Athletics: Chula Vista Runner Repeats Victory at Pardee Ocean View 5K Run & Walk for Education

Encinitas 13-year-old wins women's division and sets new course record

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Oct. 2, 2005) - Cool morning temperatures and lightly overcast skies presented perfect running conditions for participants at the Pardee Ocean View 5K Run & Walk for Education. A familiar face in San Diego's running community, 33-year-old, Hec tor Hernandez of Chula Vista cruised to an uncontested repeat victory along the 3.1-mile course in a time of 15:50. He  holds the current men's course record of 15:40 set in 2004.

Setting a new women's course record in a time of 19:15 was 13-year-old Vanessa Zucker of Encinitas. A member of the San Diego Southern California Road Runners, Zucker beat the old course record by one minute, eight seconds. She has been recognized as one of the areas most promising young runners.

Carlos Leon, 11, of San Diego won the boys' one-mile Kids' Run in a time of 5:52, and Catie Ledesma, 10, of Chula Vista won the girls' one-mile division in a time of 6:19.

Mathew Spiering, 7, of Carlsbad won the boys' half-mile Kids' Run in a time of 6:16, and Helen Lopez, 7, of Valley Center won the girls' half-mile division in a time of 6:48.

Today, the Pardee Ocean View 5K Run & Walk for Education celebrated its fourth anniversary with nearly 700 runners and walkers in Ocean View Hills Neighborhood Park. The event featured a race for every age, including children's races, prizes, food, live entertainment and a Health & Fitness Expo.

This race is the official warm-up race for the 17th annual Arturo Barrios Invitational to be held on Sunday, Oct. 23 at the Chula Vista Marina.
