Athletics: Shay named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Ryan Shay (East Jordan, Mich.) has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after posting the best place finish ever by an American man and leading Team USA to its highest placing ever at the 2005 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Shay's 15th-place finish in 1 hour, 3 minutes, 13 seconds eclipses the 17th place finish by Clint Verran in 2002 as the top finish by an American man. Team USA's men's squad finished sixth - also the best-ever U.S. finish - at the Championships with a cumulative time of 3:11:38.

Now in its fifth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
