Athletics: Glenroy Gilbert and Ken Parker to be inducted into Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame

October 3, 2005 Ottawa - Ottawa’s own Glenroy Gilbert and Ken Parker are being inducted into the Ottawa Sports hall of Fame on October 19, 2005. This event will celebrate their achievements, along with a few others, as being some of the most accomplished athletes and builders Ottawa has to offer.

Glenroy Gilbert

Glenroy Gilbert is a natural sportsman with immense talent. He was a national junior champion in the long jump and the triple jump. He made his first international debut in the 1988 Summer Olympic Games at the age of 21. Not only was Glenroy Gilbert an Olympic Champion for his gold medal in the 1996 Atlanta Games (4x100 m relay), but he has also won World Championships gold twice (1995 and 1997 gold in the 4x100 m relay), 1995 Pan-Am gold (100 m sprint), and 1998 Goodwill games gold (4x100 m relay). In addition to his track accomplishments, Glenroy Gilbert was also a member of the 4-man bobsleigh team in the 1994 Winter Olympic Games. With all of his successes, he was inducted as a member of the Canadian Olympic Sports Hall of Fame. Upon his retirement from athletics after the 2000 Summer Olympic Games, Glenroy Gilbert worked for a short time in CBC radio in Ottawa and is currently a national team coach with Canada’s 4x100 m relay team.

Ken Parker, on the other hand, is a longtime athletics leader in the Ottawa community whose contributions to athletics can be felt throughout Ottawa. Ken Parker has been a runner, coach, race director and sponsor in Ottawa for almost 3 decades. Ken Parker is the former race director of the National Capital Marathon and Nordion 10 K road races. He also is the founder and coach of the Ottawa Athletic Club Racing Team, a founding coach of the East Ottawa Lions Track Club, as well as, the organizer of Avon International and Bonnie Bell Ottawa races. He is an avid fundraiser to support amateur athletes - his former company, Sirius Consulting sponsored several local athletes and teams and Olympian Sharon Donnelly - and for this he was named volunteer of the year at the ACT sports awards in 2002. In 2004 he received the Queen's Jubilee Medal.
