McGregor wins USA Women's 10 km Championships

USA Outdoor Track & Field 10,000 meter champion Katie McGregor added the road running USA Women's 10 km Championship to resume on Monday running 32:25.4. The championship was hosted by the Tufts Health Plan 10 km in Boston, Mass.

A group of five women ran together through four miles, when McGregor and Marie Davenport of Ireland began to pull away. With one hundred meters remaining, McGregor drew clear of Davenport who finished two seconds back in 32:27.9. McGregor's win was worth $10,000.

Rounding out the top three in the U.S. women's race were defending champion Amy Yoder-Begley, second in 32:44.4, and McGregor's Team USA Minnesota teammate Carrie Tollefson, third in 33:00.0.

Aish wins USARC title

The USA Women's 10 km Championships concludes the 2005 USA Running Circuit (USARC) for women. Nicole Aish, who won last week's USA Marathon Championship, is the champion in the women's standings with 43 points. McGregor overtakes Colleen DeReuck to finish second with 37 points, with DeReuck finishing third with 34.

A USA Track & Field road series, the USARC features USA Championships from 5 km to the marathon and attracts the best U.S. distance runners. The tenth edition for the women, the 2005 circuit has seven events for women.

The first ten U.S. runners earn points at each USARC race (15 for first, 12 for second, 10 for third, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1), with a final $12,500 grand prix purse ($6000, $4000, and $2500) for the top three men and women point scorers overall. The USARC points at the USA Marathon Championships will be doubled.

The mission of the USA Running Circuit is to showcase, support, and promote U.S. runners. Since its inception in 1995, the USARC and its races have provided over $4 million dollars to U.S. distance runners.

Celedonio Rodriguez wins B.A.A. Half Marathon in first race as U.S. citizen

From Jack Fleming, BAA

BOSTON, Mass. - An overnight downpour had eased to a light, chilly rain by the time 3,082 runners took to the starting line of the fifth annual B.A.A. Half Marathon on Sunday.

Celedonio Rodriguez, a three-time Division II national champion out of Adams State College, shocked a world-class field when he ran away from them early and fearlessly to win in a personal best 1 hour, 4 minutes and 9 seconds. Rodriguez was born in Mexico, but grew up in the United States before attending Adams State in Alamosa, Colo., where he still lives and trains. This was his first victory as a professional -- and his first as an American citizen, which he became just two weeks ago.

On the women's side, Nataliya Berkut of Ukraine finally pulled away from American Jen Rhines just past the 10-mile mark for victory in 1:12:21. Berkut represented her country in the 2004 Olympics and is the national record-holder at both 5000 and 10,000 meters. Rhines, a two-time U.S. Olympian, is also the reigning U.S. 15 km road champion.
