Subscribe to Running Research News Posted: October 13, 2005 Science of Sport: RRN Unique Marathon Training Program Is Now Available By Owen Anderson, Ph. D. (Copyright © 2004-2005) Hi Everyone, During my 20 years of editing Running Research News, I have been a very avid student of the marathon. I have read every scientific publication on marathon training and nutrition and have successfully coached a wide array of marathon runners. When I traveled to Kenya, I carefully scrutinized the training techniques of some of the top marathoners in the world - people like Sammy Lelei and Tegla Loroupe. I learned so many things. From the Kenyans, I found out that weekly poundings of high-mileage training are not the paramount factor for marathon success. From the scientific research, I learned that the optimization of key variables such as lactate threshold, running economy, and vVO2max is essential for reaching one's marathon potential. From the runners I coached, I learned how to put everything I had come to understand about the marathon into a training schedule which would produce the best-possible result on marathon race day. And now I am ready to share what I have learned with you. I have created a 26-week training program which will take you to your peak of marathon fitness. This program has everything - all the running workouts, strengthening sessions, nutritional information, and injury-prevention strategies you need to set a marathon PR. The program takes you, day by day, through 26 weeks of training; all workouts are explained carefully and completely so that you will know exactly what to do. Each phase of marathon training is covered (general strengthening, running-specific strengthening, hill work, and speed work), and the program is gradually progressive, steadily moving you up to more-challenging training as your strength and fitness improve. I am not kidding when I say the program includes everything you need - even how to use sports drinks during your long runs and how to warm up on race day. You'll love the training - and you'll love the fact that you no longer have to worry about how to prepare yourself to run your best-possible marathon. Were you disappointed with your marathon results in 2005? Did an injury prevent you from reaching your marathon goals? Have you always wondered how you would fare in the marathon if your training were just right? If so, this new program is for you. To begin the program, you only need to be able to run 25 miles per week. Many marathon schedules available to the public consist of little more than filling in a training log with miles. My program is different. It has the exact training you need to optimize your vVO2max, lactate threshold, running economy, strength, and power. It has the strengthening sessions you need to minimize your risk of injury and recover quickly. It also has the specific, goal-pace long runs which are so essential for marathon success. To obtain my new program, which is now available to the running community for the very first time, please use the link at the bottom of this weekly update to go to our home page. On the home page, please click on the STORE button in the menu at the top. When you reach the STORE, simply click on MARATHON SCHEDULES in the menu near the top, and you will be given an opportunity to download the entire 26-week package. The cost? Just $199 - a bargain when you consider that you are getting more than six months of extremely productive marathon training. Please act soon, though, as the price must increase to $299 on November 1, 2005. Very kindest regards, Owen Anderson, Ph. D.
