Athletics Canada identifies 31 for Commonwealth Games Team

(Ottawa) Athletics Canada recommended today 31 athletes that may take part in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne Australia. The list features 15 Canadian Champions from the 2005 Canadian Championships, 11 Olympians from the 2004 Olympic Games, and four 2004 Paralympians. Each athlete listed must clearly demonstrate his / her performance readiness between January 1st and February 12th 2006 in order to guarantee selection to the team. Performances may be achieved in related events indoor, outdoor, or cross country sanctioned or recognized competitions. Athletes must also submit a detailed training and competition preparation plan on or before December 3rd, 2005. Please refer to Athletics Canada’s selection criteria for more details:Athletics.ca.

Additional spots (8) on the team will be chosen from the following declared and eligible athletes. Final selection will be made based on the process as described in the Selection Criteria (section 3.4), and includes an evaluation of athlete performances during the qualifying period, Commonwealth and World Rankings, and performance readiness as demonstrated during the qualifying period.
