Posted: November 15, 2005 Commonwealth Games: Getty Images appointed Official Photographer for Melbourne 2006 Games Getty Images, the world’s leading photography agency, has been appointed Official Photographer for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. Building on its strength in sports photography and ongoing association with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), Getty Images will deploy 16 talented photographers from Australia and abroad to capture the defining moments that make up the 12 day event. The Getty Images team will also include seven picture editors and a support team to ensure full coverage of all events, including the opening and closing ceremonies. “This appointment recognises our reputation as the leading photography agency and our experienced, passionate and award-winning team of photographers,” says Getty Images Vice President Asia Pacific, James Nicholls. “As official photographer, we will ensure the latest imagery from the Games is accessible globally via gettyimages.com within minutes of the action taking place. “With 71 nations competing across 16 sports and 24 disciplines, we are thrilled to be a part of this major sporting event once again.” Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Corporation Chief Executive Officer, Mr John Harnden, welcomed Getty’s involvement with the Games. “As the Official Photographer for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, we’re delighted to welcome Getty Images on board,” Mr Harnden said. “It will be a pleasure to work with the Getty team as they help to capture the multitude of magic moments from the biggest sporting and cultural event that Melbourne has ever hosted.” The Getty Images library maintains the most extensive archive of images from the Commonwealth Games spanning the last 30 years, with further coverage of the Empire/Commonwealth Games dating back to the mid 1930s.
